My Personal Relationship with Media

When I think about my relationship with media, I realize that what we have isn't just a fling. It's definitely longterm and we're probably going to get married at some point.

That being said, media and I are always together in some sort of way as I go throughout my daily life. An aspect of media that is constantly present without fail is definitely music. On the way and after school, during passing period, throughout the long homework sessions that plague my life, music is always there, aiding me with the illusion of company as I do my daily grind of work, play, whatever. Why? Well I personally believe that there are few things worse than being left alone to deafening silence. Silence is often associated with being alone, perhaps music gives me comfort by pushing that feeling of loneliness down by filling that void with noise.

On a less emo note, another part of media I enjoy is the social aspect of it. I frequently use platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat to both browse the latest topics of interest to the internet, and see what my family and friends are up to. Those are definitely the Big Three Platforms that come to mind when I think about the most commonly used apps amongst the youth. But when I'm feeling extra spicy, I might dip my toes into the black hole known as Tumblr. YouTube is arguably better, I personally think it is, but I never watch videos unless I am absolutely done with the necessary tasks assigned on that particular day, lest I get into one of my major procrastination jives. It's dangerous when you think about it, you really need to have self control, otherwise the few minutes it takes to check social media apps turns into wasted hours. Nevertheless, I check the main three everyday without fail, whether it's to maintain my Snapchat streaks or to see some Nazi-apologist get a beatdown in 280 characters or less.

On the rare occasions I am left with nothing to do, or better yet: when I forget I have something to do, I binge-watch shows on Netflix. Though this rarely happens with my niche taste in content, and I'm not going to put a list of my faves uwu because I don't think anyone cares? Though I verbally prefer to say I'm "picky" over "weird/questionable" in person. It sounds better.

A facet of media I should probably get into is the Podcast system, as it seems to be one of the main interests of both Tumblr and one of my teachers: two parties I hoped would never have anything in common, ever. That being said, I like to think I'm constantly willing to try new forms of media, which makes me a dedicated consumer. Books are cool too I guess.

But for the record, I hate TV and would never purposefully watch anything on it.

Either way, I like to think that media has had a positive impact on my life as it keeps my updated about the world around me. It's definitely kept me from being a sheltered child, as it consistently exposes me to the nature of the world, both good and bad. However, a negative side to media is that it often tries to make people believe that the world is good and evil, black and white. People tend to lack human decency behind their screens, and use this detachment for less than noble purposes. Remaining unaffected by media is inevitable, but the best way to live with it is to carry on by adapting to the explicit harshness of media (at least thats how I've dealt with it). In a world where many ideas and values clash, it's important to be able to keep an open mind and see through the perspectives of others, always retaining the ability to change and alter our own views with the exposure to foreign ideas.

Just don't be a jerk and you'll be fine.
