News Reports on Matt Lauer's Firing

Recently, women have started to come forward to address the men who are responsible for inflicting sexual harassment upon them. Today, we'll be looking at the different news reports regarding Matt Lauer and his recent firing from NBC News.

First, CBS Evening News released a report on the situation at hand. The way CBS lists the chain of events seems interesting, as it goes from Andrew Lack interviewing a staffer and her attorney, to released news reports of the allegations, to NBC terminating the contract. This makes it seem like NBC was only willing to fire Lauer after the information got to the public, which could either be true, or could just be a scheme to demonize NBC. I also felt confused as to why CBS needed to include the phrase "a 59 year old married father of three," since the information given is completely irrelevant to the story being reported on. By mentioning Lauer's family life, it seems like CBS is trying to invoke sympathy for Lauer from the viewers to make us feel sorry for him and his family.

Two days later, ABC released a report on the continuing story.  ABC's report also follows the same timeline of events that CBS has, where NBC only confronted Lauer after news outlets began to pursue the accusations. Overall, the language here seems more direct and truthful because the majority of the report is based on actual quotes from their various sources, as opposed to CBS who interjected unnecessary information to try and sway the viewer's opinion on the matter.
