Covergirl and Riverdale... Madison and Vine?

Madison and vine is the combination of advertisement and media, and upon learning of the concept in class my mind immediately went to the show Riverdale. Even though I wouldn't call myself an avid fan, I could still remember the not-so-subtle advertising in the show.

Hm. Well I don't think they could be anymore blunt.

I mean it's pretty much in your face. And if I recall correctly, when the advertising is incredibly blunt, it looses its effect. The first, and last time I watched episodes of Riverdale that contained explicit product placement, I couldn't help but wonder if they really thought this would work? Did they really think the audience would say "Wow!! My favorite character uses Covergirl, I should spend my money on this brand since it sponsored my fav show!!"

It's kind of sad. Maybe they wanted me to feel bad because they have to try so hard? To make me buy their products out of pity? Even if this was their goal, it still failed. The usage of Madison and vine just came off as desperate, and that's definitely not attractive for any brand. But this horrible product placement didn't just damage Covergirl in my eyes, it also damaged Riverdale. I mean sure it's not exactly a breakthrough show for teen TV, but I felt like they didn't even try to make it subtle. Sure there are scenes that make the name Riverdale leave a sour taste in my mouth, but the sloppy ads just make it more cringeworthy. Now Riverdale really needs to redeem itself after this stunt, and the show was already walking on eggshells in my eyes. Good luck Riverdale.

  1. I agree with your statement that it is just sad they are trying so hard to sell products, that is is to blunt to be appealing. I think that if a company were to try and sell their products through a tv show or movie, the show or movie needs to try and not be so blunt and be more sly about the way the products are being shown. I think that these companies truly believe that just because people love a certain character so much they will buy the products they use on screen. It is very sad, but true.
